The Art of Living

This Krsna consciousness movement is an art of living by which you will feel your senses are fully satisfied, but you are going to be free next life. This is the nice process. And artificially if you want to stop your senses, you will fail.

Srila Prabhupada, Lecture on Bhagavad-gita 3.6-10 -- Los Angeles, December 23, 1968

*YOU* Must Do The Work

In Bombay a man approached Srila Prabhupada, offered pranama, and said, "Oh Swamiji, you will save me." Srila Prabhupada replied, "No, I cannot save you; I can teach you how to save yourself, but you must do the work."

Told by Kausalya d.d.

Two Classes of Men

There are two classes of men always. One is called devata, godly, and the other is called demon, asura. Or satanic. Whatever you call, the two classes. So those who are God conscious, they are godly. And those who have no God consciousness, they are demonic, or satanic. So these two classes of men are always there. But at the present moment, the number of demonic or satanic consciousness, they have increased.

Room Conversation with Lord Brockway -- July 23, 1973, London

We speak whatever Krsna has spoken. That's all.

Svarupa Damodara: We should take knowledge from Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Svarupa Damodara: And Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Yes. Prabhupada is giving you the same knowledge, that's all.
There is no question of cheating. I have received this knowledge from Krsna, and you take this. That's all. My business is finished.
Kirtanananda: Things equal to the same thing are equal to each other.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is the duty. Parampara system means the spiritual master shall not give anything which is not spoken by Krsna. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's... Yare dekha, tare kaha 'krsna'-upadesa: "You become guru under My order." "But I do not know anything nicely, how can I become guru?" "No, you have no botheration. You simply take Krsna's word and say, and you become guru."
amara ajnaya guru hana tara ei desa
yare dekha, tare kaha 'krsna'-upadesa
[Cc. Madhya 7.128]
If the child says to another man, "Father said, 'This is this,' " then he is perfect. He has learned from the father, and the father is perfect, then whatever he says, it is perfect. Why should he take so much botheration? So our, process is that, that we become guru not like that rascal Guruji, no.
We speak whatever Krsna has spoken. That's all. Of course, we try to impress upon you with your reason, logic, but we shall speak the same thing, not anything else. Krsna says, "I am supreme;" We say, "Krsna is supreme."
That's all. Where is the botheration? I haven't got to find out by my logic and induction whether Krsna is supreme. That I have already done. So Krsna is supreme. There is no doubt about it. Now, whatever Krsna says, it is all right. That's all.

11's

A man mentioned to Srila Prabhupada that big events seem to happen to His Divine Grace every eleven years:

1922 met his Guru Maharaja
1933 was initiated
1944 started BTG
1955 left home
1966 started ISKCON

The man asked what would happen in 1977.
Srila Prabhupada told his servant that maybe that would be the end.

from ISKCON in the 1970s by SDG

( And in 1911 his mother passed away. And in 1900 Srila Prabhupada had some horrible sickness that he nearly died of at the age of 4.)

90% Of Our Spiritual Progress

"Common sense is 90% of our spiritual progress."

- Srila Prabhupada to Brahmananda Dasa in the 60's (told by Mahadevi Mataji ACBSP)

Why have a temple?

"Temple means people should come, people should learn the science of God. Not that to make a business of temple. Temple means spiritual educational shelter. People should come and learn what is spiritual life, what is God, what is my relationship with God."

- His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Calcutta, 8th March, 1972.

Cure for Chanting Mysticism

New York, 1966

A long-haired girl sitting close to Swamiji's dais raised her hand and asked, seemingly in trance, "When I am chanting, I feel a great concentration of energy on my forehead, and then a buzzing comes and a reddish light."

"Just keep on chanting," Swamiji replied. "It will clear up."

(from Srila Prabhupada Lilamrta)

Uncommon Sense

I read this over on Madhava Gosh Prabhu's excellent blog:

"Use common sense and if you have none then consult with others."

- Srila Prabhupada Letter to: Vidya -- Vrindaban 25 October, 1976
