• "Here in this world there are thousands of newspapers and magazines reporting the stale, repetitious happenings of this limited space. So for reporting the news of the unlimited spiritual realm, concerning the eternal, ever-fresh Supreme Personality of Godhead, we could publish a newspaper at every second, what to speak of daily."

The Weight Of The World

"Now upon the shoulders of you the leaders of this Movement falls the responsibility of practically saving this earth planet from the present dangerous position. So the work is in your hands. Let me be free now to translate books, that is my desire.

You become very responsible and convinced of this our Krishna philosophy and if you maintain your purity then you will convince everyone else with this philosophy, that is our mission. Kindly assist me to please Lord Caitanya in this way, by spreading Krishna Consciousness or pure love of God, and know it for certain that by this work you shall very very soon go back to Home, back to Godhead."

Developing a Vaishnava Community? (Part 2)

Categories: Readings, World Sankirtana

by Bir Krishna das Goswami

This is a continuation of a previous article here. The entire article with illustrations can be read here.

If we really want to have good families, good vaisnava community, we have to give up the enjo-ying spirit. We should not try to enjoy each other. We should try to serve each other. We are servants. Just like a typical statement for someone who is a leader, we call him a servant-leader. If someone takes up a position in the Movement for Krishna consciousness, we should see him as a servant of everyone else. Like me, I am a vaisnava sannyasi, a guru or whatever. I need to see that I am a servant of everyone else. I came here to serve you, not to enjoy you.

Some people spent too many years in the brahmacari asrama before they got married, and they cannot get this out of their minds. They think they are still brahmacaris when they get married. They can have five children, and they still think that they are brahmacaris. My question is: If they are really brahmacaris, where did their children come from? Brahmacari means celibate. That means, if they are really householders, they should take responsibility and help the rest of the society; brahmacaris to be brahmacaris, vanaprastas to be vanaprastas and sannyasis to be sannyasis. Srila Prabhupada said that 50 % of his mission is still unfullfilled, because he has not established that system yet.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu had many grihasta disciples who were making money, and he was very pleased. For example, Sivananda Sena was taking care of the devotees every year when they went to Jaganath Puri to see Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He would pay taxes for everyone and take care of everyone. And what would happen if they had not had Sivananda Sena? He was doing very nice service in this way. This was not maya; it was complete Krishna consciousness. This is the point. To fullfill Srila Prabhupada's mission we have to establish a very nice, clearly defined social system. This is not material if we really want to spread Krishna consciousness all over the world.

One Day The World Will Realize How Valuable Srila Prabhupada's Books Are

Satsvarupa: They get nice attendance on Sunday. Many people come.

Prabhupada: There is good hope.

Satsvarupa: Oh, yes. Good book distribution here too.

Prabhupada: That is the most successful. Wherever book distribution is going on nicely, that is successful, because people are in gross ignorance. They are taking this temporary life as everything. Very horrible condition. We are trying to explain what is the actual life. ..... Only hope is that you distribute books, as much as possible, whole Europe, whole America. If they come to some day, they will realize what is this value. [break] ... day they will realize that what valuable books we have left for the study of the whole world. That will come.

The Sun Is Closer Than The Moon

"Our knowledge should be through the sastra. That is practical. And our process of knowledge is this: we get knowledge from sastra, like Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Vedic knowledge. We do not claim to be very big scientists. That is not possible. But we get knowledge from the best scientific man or person, the Personality of Godhead, Krsna, Vyasadeva, Narada, Asita, Devala, later on the acaryas, Ramanujacarya, Madhvacarya, Sankaracarya, Caitanya.

"Our process of knowledge is not any speculation: "It may be," "Perhaps." No. We don't accept this knowledge. "It may be," "Perhaps" -- these are all foolishness. That means one who has no perfect knowledge, he will say, "It may be," "Perhaps." One who has definite knowledge, why he will say, "It may be"? It must be.

"So far as we get information from Srimad-Bhagavatam, there is sun, then moon, according to Bhagavatam. We were talking about these things: whether the moon is the first planet or the sun is the first planet. So far as we understand from Vedic literature, the moon is the second planet. The sun is the first planet.

"If we consider like that, then the moon is beyond the sun planet. The estimation is there in the Srimad-Bhagavatam:1,600,000 miles above the sun, the moon is situated. Now, if we take consideration of the sun planet situated 93,000,000 miles from earth, then add 1,600,000 miles again, it comes to 95,000,000 miles away from the earthly planet. And how you can reach there in four days, 95,000,000 miles away? If we apply our common sense, then it appears they have never gone to the moon planet. It is all bogus propaganda. It is not possible."

The Consciousness of a Vaisnava Leader

"So somehow or other, it has begun, the blessings of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, as he wanted me, he desired me. So because he desired, my... I am not very expert or educated or nothing extraordinary, but only thing is that I believed in his word. That is... You can say that is my qualification. I believed cent percent in his word. So whatever success is there, it is just due to my firm faith in his instruction. So I am trying to follow. And by his grace, you are helping me."

Thirteen Things That Do Not Make Sense

from: newscientist.com

1 - The Placebo Effect

DON'T try this at home. Several times a day, for several days, you induce pain in someone. You control the pain with morphine until the final day of the experiment, when you replace the morphine with saline solution. Guess what? The saline takes the pain away.

This is the placebo effect: somehow, sometimes, a whole lot of nothing can be very powerful. Except it's not quite nothing. When Fabrizio Benedetti of the University of Turin in Italy carried out the above experiment, he added a final twist by adding naloxone, a drug that blocks the effects of morphine, to the saline. The shocking result? The pain-relieving power of saline solution disappeared.

So what is going on? Doctors have known about the placebo effect for decades, and the naloxone result seems to show that the placebo effect is somehow biochemical. But apart from that, we simply don't know.

Benedetti has since shown that a saline placebo can also reduce tremors and muscle stiffness in people with Parkinson's disease (Nature Neuroscience, vol 7, p 587). He and his team measured the activity of neurons in the patients' brains as they administered the saline. They found that individual neurons in the subthalamic nucleus (a common target for surgical attempts to relieve Parkinson's symptoms) began to fire less often when the saline was given, and with fewer "bursts" of firing - another feature associated with Parkinson's. The neuron activity decreased at the same time as the symptoms improved: the saline was definitely doing something.

Party Spirit Is The Enemy of Truth

"Party spirit - that great enemy of the truth - will always baffle the attempt of the inquirer who tries to gather truth from the religious works of his nation and will make him believe that the Absolute Truth is nowhere except in his old religious book."
