• "Here in this world there are thousands of newspapers and magazines reporting the stale, repetitious happenings of this limited space. So for reporting the news of the unlimited spiritual realm, concerning the eternal, ever-fresh Supreme Personality of Godhead, we could publish a newspaper at every second, what to speak of daily."

Srila Prabhupada's Teaches Us How To Preach

"That is preaching. Our process is anusrnuyat. We hear from the superiors and reproduce it. That is sravanam-kirtanam. Then perfect. If I add something, my own imagination, then it will spoil. No addition, alteration. As It Is. As it is you hear from your spiritual master, reproduce. That's all. Yare dekha tare kaha krsna upadesa. This is Krsna-upadesa is coming by parampara, so you reproduce. That's all. Even a child can reproduce what he has heard from his father. It is not at all difficult."

-- Srila Prabhupada, morning walk, August 29, 1975 Vrindaban, India.

Brahmanas Are Truthful

"So it is not very much advisable to make lies just to sell our books … lies, will not help us to train ourselves in truthfulness. Lie to some, not to others, that is not a very good philosophy. Rather the Brahmanas are always truthful, even to their enemies."

Classic Photo

Categories: Humour, Podcasts

Here's a shot of Kurma Prabhu getting hauled off the streets of Melbourne in the earlier days of the Hare Krishna movement. Classic photo isn't it? 4 cops and one sandal missing. I believe the whole incident worked in our favour in terms of generating publicity and sympathy from the clergy.

This picture goes well with this classic Australian number by Matt Taylor. Enjoy! :) [download]

Austerity Of Speech

Categories: Readings, Realizations, Sastra

Tungavidya's Vision

Categories: Readings, Inspirational

13. Lord Gaurasundara’s broad shoulders are like a lion’s, and the charming smile on the corner of His cheeks is the sweetest of all sweet things. He is absorbed in the unfathomable, ecstatic love the gopis felt in separation from Krishna. And thus, His body sometimes under goes very amazing transformations. Srimati Radharani and Lord Madahava have combined together in Lord Gaurasundara’s body, which is as splendid and beautiful as the whorl of a golden lotus flower. May that Lord Gaurasundara protect you.

14. When Lord Gauranga saw an assemblage of new rain clouds, He was reminded of Lord Krsna, and he became just like a madman with love for Him. When Lord Gauranga saw a peacock feather He became greatly agitated, and when he saw a bracelet of conch shells He trembled. Seeing a dark-complexioned boy and surmising that the boy was Krsna, Lord Gauranga was astonished and afraid. In this way Lord Gauranga, who is actually the Supreme Personality of Godhaead, Lord Hari, preached the glories of pure and ecstatic love for Himself. May that Lord Hari, who has assumed a golden form, protect you.

15. The shining full moon of Lord Caitanya was born from the milk ocean of Srimati Sacidevi’s womb; that moon is learned in the sixty-four astonishing transcendental arts, and it appears very splendid dressed in glorious saffron garments the color of the rising sun. That pure and beautiful moon is full of the nectar of pure love of God, and possesses the luster of the sattvika-bhava ecstatic symptoms. It appears like a great ocean of mercy. That moon is the combination of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the source of innumerable incarnations, and the supremely beautiful Srimati Radharani. May that moon of Lord Caitanya arise within the sky of your hearts.

16. When Lord Caitanya was overwhelmed with intense pure love of God, His hand would tremble as he touched the knotted string about His waist to count His recitations of the Hare Krsna Maha-mantra. In this way he chanted His own holy names which grants auspiciousness to the entire universe. He was so eager to see His form of Lord Jagannatha, that His face became bathed in tears as He hurriedly moved about, coming and going. May that supreme Lord Hari, in the form of Lord Gauranga, a vision of whom delights the eyes, protect you.

17. The moonlight of Lord Caitanyacandra’s luster violently uproots the darkness of ignorance in the hearts of all the living beings in the universe. That moonlight causes the ocean of the nectar ocean of the pure love of God to continuously expand and overflow its shores. Sprinkling the nectar of pure love of God, that moonlight greatly cools this universe which is devastated by the burning threefold miseries of material existence. May that moonlight of Lord Caitanyacandra constantly shine within your hearts.

The Lotus Footprints of Lord Caitanya

Categories: Readings, Inspirational

From the Sri Rupa Cintamani and Ananda Candrika of Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura

1) O Mind!
Always remember the markings
On the right lotus foot
Of Sri Gauranga
At the base of the toe of the right foot
Is a barleycorn,
And below that is an umbrella.
At the connecting place below the toe
and the fore-toe
Is a thin line that goes down.

2-3) Please remember all of these:
Below the fore-toe is a stick,
And below the middle toe is a lotus.
Below that is a mountain,
And below that is a chariot.
To the southern side of the chariot
Is a club,
And to the left side is sakti.
Below the little toe is an elephant goad
And below that is a thunderbolt.

4-5) O Mind!
Please remember these auspicious sixteen markings
Decorating the lotus food of Sri Gaura Hari:
Below the thunderbolt is a sacrificial altar,
And below that are kunda earings,
which swing to and fro.
Below all these imprints are four effulgent swastikas.
In the middle of these swastikas is an octagon,
And at their four corners are four blackberry fruits
Facing the octagon.

6-7) O Mind!
Please remember the left lotus foot of Sri Gauranga
Decorated with the following markings:
At the base of the big toe of the left foot
Is a conch,
And below that is a disc.
Below the middle toe is space,
And below that is an unstrung bow,
And below that is a jeweled bangle.
Below the little toe is a beautiful water-pot.

8-9) Please remember:
Below the water-pot is the hoof of a cow,
And below that is a beautiful flag.
Below the flag is a flower,
And below that is a twig.
Below the cow's hoof is a triangle
And below that are four captivating water pots.

10-11) In the middle of these four water-pots
Is a half-shaped moon,
And below that is a beautiful looking tortoise.
Below that is a fish.
To the right side of the fish
And parallel to the twig and tortoise
Is a beautiful garland.
Thus O Mind! Please remember these
Thirty-two imprints collectively.
Among these, sixteen are decorating the left foot,
And sixteen are beautifying the right foot
Of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

The Peace Formula

by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

The great mistake of modern civilization is to encroach upon other's property as though it were one's own and to thereby create an unnecessary disturbance of the laws of nature. These laws are very strong. No living entity can violate them. Only one who is Krishna conscious can easily overcome the stringency of the laws of nature and thus become happy and peaceful in the world.

As a state is protected by the department of law and order, so the state of the Universe, of which this earth is only an insignificant fragment, is protected by the laws of nature. This material nature is one of the different potencies of God, who is the ultimate proprietor of everything that be. This earth is, therefore, the property of God, but we, the living entities, especially the so-called civilized human beings, are claiming God's property as our own, under both an individual and collective false conception. If you want peace, you have to remove this false conception from your mind and from the world. This false claim of proprietorship by the human race on earth is partly or wholly the cause of all disturbances of peace on earth.
Foolish and so-called civilized men are claiming proprietary rights on the property of God because they have now become godless. You cannot be happy and peaceful in a godless society. In the Bhagavad-gita, Lord Krishna says that He is the factual enjoyer of all activities of the living entities, that He is the Supreme Lord of all universes, and that He is the well-wishing friend of all beings. When people of the world know this as the formula for peace, it is then and there that peace will prevail.

Therefore, if you want peace at all, you will have to change our consciousness into Krishna consciousness, both individually and collectively, by the simple process of chanting the holy name of God. This is a standard and recognized process for achieving peace in the world. We therefore recommend that everyone become Krishna conscious by chanting:

This is practical, simple, and sublime. Four hundred and eighty years ago this formula was introduced in India by Lord Sri Chaitanya, and now it is available in your country. Take to this simple process of chanting as above mentioned, realize your factual position by reading the Bhagavad-gita As It Is, and re-establish your lost relationship with Krishna, God. Peace and prosperity will be the immediate worldwide result.

For the Good of Others

Here is a copy of H.G. Bhurijana Prabhu's poem to Srila Prabhupada.

namah om vishnu-pādāya krishna-prestāya bhū-tale
srimate bhaktivedānta-svāmin iti nāmine
namaste sarasvate deve gaura-vane-pracarine

For the Good of Others

For the good of others
For their welfare
You struggled
You planned
You spoke
You wrote—
You lived
For the eternal good of others
For their Krishna consciousness
You gave all selflessly

For the service of the Unlimited
who are unlimited
who were limited
beyond our capacity
beyond our sincerity

Straining and immature
helping and hurting others
—sometimes terribly—
we sometimes
like a tightened rubber band
retracting forcibly back again
to our normalcy

I’m learning
Srila Prabhupada
That only the viewpoint
of eternity
reveals perfection
Your eye
and heart on Braja
saw only eternal good
And Krishna’s indomitable will
And saving fallen jivas

I read and talk
of Philosophy
of eternality
of Goloka
with intelligence
and lecturing words I speak
But realization—
My soul longs
to ease this duality
longs to see from eternity
from Braja in Krishna’s service

Granted Braja vision
How all would change!
How different austerity would seem!
As would inconvenience
pleasure and pain!
But now
soul and vision trapped
small and dull
like a jewel sparkling within
fleeting time’s mud

Times change
lighting shifts the landscape view
Noontime judges dawn
Yet clearly—
for the good of others
for their welfare
You struggled
You planned
You spoke
You wrote—
You lived
For the eternal good of others
For their Krishna consciousness
You gave all selflessly

To that eternal good
of Braja’s loving service
that you carried—
To that love
inspiring your gift-
and to you who act
only for the good of others
I offer my obeisances forever

Your eternal servant,
Bhūrijana dāsa

Sex Is Bondage

by Govinda dasi ACBSP

One day in Montreal, during afternoon guest hours a young devotee from the temple asked me for an appointment to see Srila Prabhupada. I agreed and told her to come in the late afternoon, as it was his custom to visit with guests and devotees after his afternoon nap.

This girl was an artist, her name was Madhavi Lata and she had come from New York. She was now living at the Montreal temple and I assumed she wanted to discuss her paintings with Srila Prabhupada and ask questions about them, as did Jadurani and the other artists from time to time. However, her intention was different. When she came, she began to explain her problem to Srila Prabhupada, and Srila Prabhupada having difficulty understanding her, called me into the room.

I was working in the kitchen nearby and heard his call: “Govind Dasi!” He always pronounced my name with 4 syllables: Govind Dasi, other than Govinda Dasi. I rushed in and made obeisances and he told me to bring prasadam. Then he motioned for me to sit down and listen to the discussion. Madhavi Lata was explaining to Srila Prabhupada that as a brahmacarini at the temple she was having difficulty being around all the other girls as they were often dressing and sometimes wearing only slips and cholis while putting on their saris. She tried to explain to Srila Prabhupada that this was a great agitation for her and she needed a different living situation.

She was very upset and didn’t know what to do. Srila Prabhupada was having difficulty understanding her problem. Srila Prabhupada was encouraging her to chant Hare Krsna, read his books and do her wonderful art work. He inspired her and preached to her and talked to her about Krsna and the temporary existence in the material world. I sat quietly listening to the conversation nearby and observing that he was giving her the highest instruction that was applicable in every case.

However, there was clearly a lapse in communication. Eventually, the girl graciously respected prasadam and left. Then I sat down in front of Srila Prabhupada’s desk and he asked me: “What is her problem?” I groped for words, trying to find a way to express it and finally said: “Srila Prabhupada, in this country there are some women who are attracted to other women sexually, not to men. So she is having this problem living with the other girls and doesn’t know what to do about it”. Srila Prabhupada’s eyes grew large and round and he said: “Oh”. He saw the whole thing immediately. Then he said in a very surprised tone: “In India there are some such low-class men but not women, never women”. His face was full of surprise. I said: “Yes, Srila Prabhupada, in the West there are such women also”.

Then he leaned back and wagged his head side-to-side, Indian fashion in a very amused and almost amazed look. “Just see, this sex life. Men to men, women to women. Men to women. Sex life is the bondage. It is all bondage. But, he opened his eyes wide: the sex life between man and woman can be sanctified by marriage. That is the difference. Krsna says in the Gita that I am the sex life within marriage. So within marriage it can be used for having nice Krsna conscious children but not like this. This is very low class”.

Srila Prabhupada you clearly cut through the illusion of homosexuality, simply and concisely. Never mind arguments one way or another. You saw it simply as another form of bondage, one that cannot be sanctified by God or purified within the marriage institution of God. Nowadays, Western society has begun to aggressively promote homosexuality but their promotion cannot change the truth. It is simply another form of bondage in the material world, forcing the soul to take birth after birth of endless suffering. Unlike us, Srila Prabhupada you never became swayed by personal likes or dislikes, preferences or passions.

You cut through our illusions with the swift and sure knife of knowledge and irrefutable truth. Then you stitched the wound with your divine love and instruction: chant Hare Krsna and be happy. Thank you. Your opinion, Srila Prabhupada is as valid today and unchanged by time as it was in 1968. All these various modern trends of society you once commented to me, that nothing is new, they are all old, these things have been done again and again and Krsna knows them all. He spoke about them and he deals with each on in the Gita. Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for being above everything and being able to teach us so that we also can see things from the window of spiritual realization. Thank you, Srila Prabhupada.

Gopala's bodily complexion is just like a fully blossomed blue lotus. His face is as pleasant as the moon. His head is decorated with peacock feathers. His chest is adorned with the mark of Srivatsa. He wears a Kaustubha gem around His neck. He is dressed in glittering yellow garments. His form is worshiped by the lotus-like hearts of the gopis. He is surrounded by the cows and cowherd boys. His enchanting flute produces the Kama-bija mantra. He is fully decorated with various divine ornaments.
